Who's Eligible for a Car Loan with Cash Direct?
Thinking about a car loan but not sure if you'll qualify? You're not alone, it's usually the first question people ask before they even start looking at cars. The good news is that car loan requirements are generally more straightforward than people expect, and having a patchy credit history or being on Centrelink doesn't automatically rule you out.
At Cash Direct, we may be able to help you get behind the wheel faster, with less hassle than a lot of traditional lenders. Below is a plain-language rundown of what we typically look at, the documents you'll want to have handy, and answers to the questions we hear most often. If you have questions about your own situation, give us a call on 0488841177, we're happy to talk it through.
Eligibility can vary from lender to lender, but as a general guide, you'll usually need to:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
- Have some form of regular income, this includes wages, self-employment income, or Centrelink payments
- Be able to show you can manage the repayments alongside your other expenses
We welcome applications from Centrelink recipients, single parents and pensioners, and we assess every application on its own merits rather than ruling people out on a single factor. That said, every application goes through our standard assessment process, and meeting the criteria above doesn't guarantee approval it just means you're in a good position to apply. If you're receiving Centrelink payments, it's worth checking that page for details specific to your situation.
The Documents You'll Need to Apply
One of the most common reasons applications get held up is missing or mismatched paperwork, so it's worth gathering these before you start. For the full breakdown, see the exact documents you'll need but here's a quick overview of what usually comes up.
Proof of Identity
We'll need to see a copy of a primary photo ID your driver's licence or passport both work showing your name, date of birth and current address.
Proof of Income (Including Centrelink)
We need to see that you have income coming in and that it's steady enough to support the loan. If you're employed, this is usually your payslips or bank statements showing regular deposits. If you receive Centrelink payments, your Centrelink income statement can generally serve the same purpose.
Bank Statements
We typically ask for your most recent bank statements generally covering the last 90 days so we can get a realistic picture of your income and everyday spending. This isn't about judging how you spend your money; it's about making sure a new repayment is genuinely manageable for you.
References
We ask for two personal references a family member, friend or colleague along with their name, relationship to you, and a contact number. This is a standard part of our process, not a sign anything's wrong with your application.
Does Your Credit History Matter?
It can, but it's not the whole story. Unlike some lenders who assess applications on credit score alone, we look at your overall financial picture your income, your expenses, and your ability to manage repayments rather than treating a lower credit score as an automatic no. If you've had bad credit history issues in the past, it's still worth reaching out, as we may still be able to help. You can read more on our car loans for bad credit page. As with any lender, approval is subject to assessment and isn't guaranteed.
What About the Car Itself? Vehicle Requirements to Keep in Mind
The car you're planning to buy can also factor into your application things like its age, value and condition may affect what we're able to offer. If you're looking at a used car rather than something brand new, that's completely fine; a lot of our applicants are financing used vehicles. Once you've found the car you're after, having its details on hand (make, model, year, and the asking price) will help speed things along. You may also be asked to arrange comprehensive insurance once your loan is finalised, since the vehicle is often tied to the loan itself.
